Relative efficacy of neomycin and ampicillin against urease producing organisms.

چکیده
The efficacy of neomycin in hepatic encephalopathy was highlighted3 as early as in 1957. The azotemia associated with aome fonru; of severe liver diseaseS militates against the use of neomycin in these circumstances6-8. The usefulness of ampicillin has been reported and the antibiotic has been suggested to be a satisfactory substitute9•1o. However, no study has directly compared the efficacy of patients suffering from portal hyper· tension. The present study was under· taken to see the relative efficacy of ampicillin and neomycin in the treatment or hepatic encephalopathy cases on the basil of the sensitivity pattern of the urease producing organism~; isolated from their gut. Study of the in vitro activities of rifaximin and comparator agents against 536 anaerobic intestinal bacteria from the perspective of potential utility in pathology involving bowel flora.
Rifaximin, ampicillin-sulbactam, neomycin, nitazoxanide, teicoplanin, and vancomycin were tested against 536 strains of anaerobic bacteria. The overall MIC of rifaximin at which 50% of strains were inhibited was 0.25 microg/ml. Ninety percent of the strains tested were inhibited by 256 microg/ml of rifaximin or less, an activity equivalent to those of teicoplanin and vancomycin but less than th...
متن کاملOral neomycin dosage schedules for suppression of ammonia production by bowel flora.
To better define a minimal but optimal dose of oral neomycin to suppress ammonia production by bowel flora, several dosage regimens were examined in normal healthy volunteers. Fecal urease activity was quantitatively determined and was used as an indirect measure of intrinsic ammonia production by bowel flora. Large doses of neomycin were found to exert inhibition of fecal urease for many days....
متن کاملClinical Pharmacology of Ampicillin in Neonates and Infants: Effects and Pharmacokinetics
Ampicillin is a bactericidal antibiotic, it penetrates into the bacterial wall better than penicillin G and is active against gram-negative bacteria that are resistant to penicillin G. Ampicillin has a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and is the most widely used antibiotic for treating infections caused by Listeria, β-lactamase-negative Haemophilus, enterococci, Shigella, streptococci, Esc...
متن کاملUnclassified, lactose-fermenting, urease-producing member of the family Enterobacteriaceae resembling Escherichia coli.
Eight strains of an unclassified, oxidase-negative, lactose-fermenting, urease-producing, gram-negative bacillus were isolated from clinical material. With the exception of urease production, the biochemical characteristics of these organisms resembled those of Escherichia coli.
متن کاملبررسی اثر Sub-minimal concentration آمپی سیلین، جنتامایسین و نالیدیگزیک اسید بر رشد، تولید آمونیاک و فعالیت آنزیم اوره آز پروتئوس میرابیلیس
In Vivo, after administration of treatment, concentrations of antimicrobial agents will reduce to sub-inhibitory levels (sub-MIC) and may therefore affect the properties of target bacteria. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the in vitro effect of sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (sub-MIC) of ampicillin, gentamicin and nalidixin acid on morphology, growth, ammonium produc...
